I’m not sure what to make of the refereeing in this game.
I could have sworn that I saw the ball fouling a French player and it wasn’t even shown a yellow.
It may even have been borderline red, but yellow would have been a fair decision ultimately, as the player who was clattered to the floor was up on her feet in next to no time to take the free kick.
I said earlier in the thread that the standard has come on leaps and bounds, but this game tonight illustrates that there are still areas where they need to learn. One is do NOT dive in from behind against an attacker going nowhere in the penalty area. That was such a stupid penalty France gave away a few minutes ago. As usual, it was missed.
This game has got a horrible inevitability about it. Despite being down to ten players after 13 minutes, I think Germany are going to win on penalties. France will only have themselves to blame if so, they just haven't used the extra woman effectively.
Feel sorry for the French. Second best team in the tournament, but if you can’t put ten women away after going a goal up, them’s the breaks. At least it was a quality shoot out, at last. No comedy.
Women's football would come on leaps and bounds if they a) stopped comparing it with men's football, b) stopped over-hyping it and c) leave it to itself. BBC are massive culprits on this. You have a separate page for Women's football which is great. However, the main football page is saturated with it. There is no separate page for Men's football. The amount of coverage the three lower leagues get is ridiculously low considering the amount of supporters involved.
These Euros have got better as the tournament has progressed with the exception perhaps of the majority of the penalties.
I remember watching it about 15 years ago when you couldn't help but laugh at a lot of it. The standard of goalkeeping was hilarious. So it has already come on a long way in a short time and will continue to do so. As long as the media, the woke purists et al remember it is not as good as men's football. No matter of hype will make The Stereophonics on par with The Rolling Stones.
