Summer Transfer Window

Alan Nixon saying that Middlesbrough are interested in Josh Key for around £5 million
I said the other day we may be open to selling Key if he isn’t going to show signs he wants a new deal, and Galbraith playing in that position we already have cover, might be why he didn’t play yesterday.

Swansea City want a chunky £5 million transfer fee for highly-rated right back Josh Key.

A few rivals, including Middlesbrough, have asked about Key who is one of the best in his position at the level.

Boro went for Blackburn’s Callum Brittain instead but the Swans are fielding more calls - only none are at their valuation.

Boro fans saying it’s not true.

See, this is where we need to play the game properly - if a number of clubs are interested in Key, then slap a £10m asking price on him. He's not worth that in a month of Sundays, but there are teams at this level with cash who will pay that sort of silly money, especially if they think they're in a bidding war. Rinse 'em.

I'd be reluctant to sell Key. I want Galbraith to play in his natural position, that is how the move would have been sold to him. I'd only sell Key if the contract situation isn't looking good and we can get a decent fee for a good replacement.
I agree with all of this. I would only sell Key is we have a ready made replacement either in the form of Sam Parker (if he is ready) or another player that we have already identified that would cost us less than the money we get for Key.

We have two full backs - Key and Tymon - who are both vulnerable in defensive situations but are a driving force moving forward and creating opportunities. Its a dilemma if the rumour has fact, but the bottom line is that every player in the squad has a price on their head, but on the other hand, we now have a recruiting team that I feel will replace either player and still make a profit.

It's all about how important he is in how we set up this season.
Imo he still needs to develop as his decision making at times is questionable.
If we have a replacement in mind, and at a sale price of achievable £5m then I would sell, if it freed some money for further strengthening.
I'm undecided his time out of the team could have had a long term effect to his fitness.

And both were as a result of the way Williams was sending them out to play. It was a tactical choice for them to have swathes of empty space in behind them rather than any particular inability on either players part. Both looked a lot more solid once Sheehan changed things around.

Having said that, I'd probably take something in the region of £5m for Key, even more so if contract talks drag a bit, and hope that we could replace him for 50-60% of that.

Think we need a process and be strong with players running contracts down. This is the agents dominating how clubs are run with regard to contracts.

There should be deadlines in place and adhered to.

This isn't a new thing with us. Jenkins used to be the same with contracts. It's one of the reasons why we lost both Pratley and DeVries for nothing when we got promoted to the Prem.

Talks should start 18 months out from contract expiry. If nothing can be agreed by the 12 month stage then a sale needs to be considered.
