Kim Hellberg - Now’s the Time

Why is everyone so excited about this Kim Hellberg guy?

I also just googled him and found the wiki page for him has been edited to say he manages Swansea lol

That last paragraph is key.

He does have experience even if it’s in a relatively easier environment.

Sheehan was much more of a punt than someone who has five years success as a manager.

I can’t pretend I know much about him but I’m definitely more optimistic. It does feel more fresh than many others are suggesting.

His possession stats are far more in the Martinez//Rodgers area.

Around 60% suggests are more offensive style to say 70% which is a much more negative retention style for example.
And being Swedish he will know much more of Inoussa and Widdell and their strengths. Could be an excellent appointment

Odds appear to be shortening on Kim Hellberg becoming the next Swansea boss, but it appears Hammarby are keen on keeping their current boss.

WalesOnline understands Swansea have already held talks with the 37-year-old, who has one year left on his current deal at the club.

A move to English football, it's claimed, would interest Hellberg, but Hammarby's Mikael Hjelmberg seems hopeful the club can tie him down to an extended deal.

"There is an ongoing dialogue with Kim and his representative and has been for a while," he told Swedish outlet Aftonbladet last week.

"At the moment there is nothing new to report there.

"Our preferred scenario is of course that we find an agreement with Kim about an extension. He is a fantastically competent and good football coach who has done a great job for Hammarby and we would like to see him continue at Hammarby.

"He has a contract for next year as well and that is what we are looking at.

"We have a contract with Kim and he is in a great place and he has done a great job. We absolutely assume that Kim will coach Hammarby in 2026 as well."
I think every manager in Sweden would love a crack at the championship. Their owners are trying to put a brave face on it but I think he’ll find it hard to resist.

It's obvious. We've never heard of him, have no idea how good he is, he's foreign and has a girl's name. Is that not enough to stir you up?

I'll say it now this appointment largely has a feeling of underwhelming me

Russell Martin Mk1 (Russell Martin)
Russell Martin MkII (Luke Williams)
Russell Martin MkIII (Alan Sheehan)
Russell Martin MkIV (Kim Hellberg?)

I hope thats wrong but we are continuing I fear on a managerial road that feels the same as the last one. You know, the one that didnt work...

That said I also don't believe he is going to be our next manager
I think we have to stop being afraid of possession coaches, the way Martin played it was extreme and not everyone who plays that way will be as self destructive.

I thought we were more purposeful on the ball under Williams when it was going well, and we suffered at the back less often. I think people forget the optimism and improvement in performances last Christmas because of what came after. There were clearly issues behind the scenes with Grimes leaving and the West Brom speculation.

Sheehan for me was nothing like Martin to be honest, the play was slow like Martin’s but we didn’t look like we knew what we were doing going forward and you can’t really say that for Martin. There was at least a blueprint.

I do understand why the fanbase is a bit fed up with the style though, we’ve had an underwhelming few years on and off the pitch. Hopefully now things have changed we can afford to give a possession oriented coach what he needs to succeed.

Fair, but you also have to take into account that the last two we've had have been horrifically shit.

At this stage in proceedings, I'm less interested in a "philosophy", I'm far more interested in having a coach for whom defending isn't having 10 people camped on the edge of their own area, and attacking isn't recycling the ball slowly from side to side and not having shots at goal.

We just need a normal, sane coach who understands how to strike a balance.

No emperor’s new clothes please. ‘Possession’ my arse. If the other team have it, defend it, and get it. If you have it, use it and put it in their net. ‘Possession’ for its own sake, as an objective or as a 🤮 philosophy is just one big heap of horseshit, and extremely pointless, tedious and boring.

He is a complete unknown to me but that will not stop me from being excited and optimistic. Six months late but just in time for Christmas.

I agree, we need someone like that.

I think we tend to see possession football as the commonality between Martin and Williams and we say “that’s why that didn’t work.” But in reality both Martin and Williams were fairly inexperienced when we employed them, for me, that has more to do with why they failed here than the style they played, along with a lack of backing from the previous owners.

That’s nothing against Williams and Martin, I think both will end up having decent careers. Being a new coach to the level with Levien and Kaplan at the helm can’t have been easy.

At least Hellberg has five years of experience managing at two different levels of Swedish football. We know from the one time we’ve done it (Potter) that it can translate well to the Championship.

We need to find someone who works on the baggage carousel at Bristol Airport…worked wonders for Williams.
