Kim Hellberg - New Manager?

A few said his attacking numbers were excellent but not the defence. I have heard though that Norwich didn’t have the best defenders that season.

Will Still is another that I think will succeed elsewhere.
I think their goalkeeper made howler after howler last season

Exactly this I don’t know why people don’t understand this.
It’s not me that doesn’t understand. I’m not saying the bloke is a dud, I would have been okay with him coming in the summer, but the board saw something they didn’t like, or some reason not to employ him. Don’t give me that baloney about Sheehan doing so well they had to give him the job, that would be nonsense if this Hellberg is the messiah that he is now being touted as. If Hellberg turned us down at the time for other reasons then fair enough, sometimes it’s just the timing that doesn’t work out but we were told the board preferred Sheehan. If he comes and does well I’ll be delighted but at the moment he’s second choice to a failure.

He’s the answer now because Sheehan has shown he wasn’t up to the job. Surely that’s obvious?
What’s obvious is that Sheehan wasn’t up to it. The rest remains to be seen, but at least your on record as saying that Hellberg is the answer to the shitshow that’s been going on for the last several years. Seems like more of the same to me, but good on you.

I don’t think it was obvious in the Summer that Sheehan wasn’t up to it? There was no evidence of that. The stats show he was one of the best performing coaches in the division

Yes in hindsight we all now know he wasn’t up to it but I don’t think many would have said that 6 months ago.

I do agree with you that Hellberg is a risk, but just don’t agree with the idea that the reason he isn’t good enough is because he wasn’t appointed in the Summer.

It just feels to me like another potential appointment made off the back of fancy stats and heatmaps, like with Martin and Williams. We're taking a risk on a coach whose numbers may stand up to a certain extent but, crucially, at an inferior standard to the division we're in.

Look at Tim Walter and Johannes Thorup from last season - parachuted in from nowhere, struggled, got sacked. Going back a bit further you had Duff with us. Bulut at Cardiff came with the sort of narrative now surrounding Hellberg, but we know how that ended.

Sorry to put a downer on things but to me, it just feels like an enormous and unnecessary risk of making the same mistakes we've made previously.
Yes please - fancy sats and heat maps are what we need to take account of.
For the past year we have had a coach who fails to understand that if you don't touch the ball in the opposition area, create chances and attack through all the attacking zones - then guess what - you become Swansea Nil.
The stats are the measure of whether your tactical approach is effective.
Sheehan was too much old school jumpers for goal posts and defensive solidity - IF he had tried to address some of our attacking deficiencies (as revealed by the stats) he might still be in gainful employment.

I get what you're saying JA - being on top of the kind of stats that actually win you football matches, I'm totally on board with.

But you know as well as I do that Martin and Williams were selected largely on the basis of their possession and pass accuracy stats - which in most cases is con man football, unless you're Pep Guardiola.

As always, I'll judge the new coach on results and performances. But I don't think anyone could blame me for being 'once bitten twice shy', given our recent track record for appointments.
