Three Minute ‘Hydration’ Breaks in all World Cup Matches

Same for me. I wasn’t old enough for 1982, but was all over 1986. I thought this was the pinnacle until Italia 90, and it hasn’t been beaten since.
Agree that Italia 90 was the pinnacle of World Cups for me also, coincided with me being able to watch in the pubs and drink (although I was 17 at the time, it wasn't too difficult to get served unlike today and the nanny state our young is being brought up in).

What I really dislike about this upcoming World Cup is this that they are trying to gerrymander the draw with this seeding of four teams that can't meet until the semi's (next time it will be 8 teams until the 1/4 finals.....). Fans will need to spend fortunes and travel will be immense distances.

Overuse of VAR and these water breaks (coaching opportunties) will ruin football at the World Cup, but it will present advertising opportunties so FIFA will be most happy.

You can see it now VAR powered by Verzion or the Walmart Water break.

However as usual I will try and get into it, with the vain hope it will be the best one yet.

What everyone has said above strikes a chord, but where the weather is ridiculously hot, then these small breaks make obvious sense. Not too sure about matches in Canada though 🤔

No one is saying there shouldn’t be a comfort break in matches played in really hot weather. The fact they will all be 3 minutes long and it looks like every match will have this is the thing that is annoying me. Some of these matches are being played in arenas with air conditioning. Toronto can be very warm in the summer so I don’t think it makes a difference about Canada being included. Universal 3 minutes long breaks across the board is bonkers. Breaks in matches in sweltering heat are perfectly fine.

tbh 3 minutes "long" is not going to really impact things, they're looking for consistency obviously across the whole tournament, everyone gets a 3 min rest.. but bloody VAR/ other general time wasting tactics are more problematical. At least it'll be a definite 3 mins...as someone said above, hot dog time etc 🙂

It's ok, ECB and Max would love it, because they'll be about 5 beers deep in 22 minutes and would need a slash break, makes perfect sense for the alcohol consumers

Monmouth's right about 1970. The first one I remember was 66 😱
Me too in the 66 club. Bobby Charlton was majestic in that tournament.

They took him off in the 1970 match v W Germany to save him for the semi finals and look what happened 😂

But for glamour and style that 1970 tournament was the best for me. Colour TV, the first time seeing the magical yellow and blue of Brazil and their glorious glorious football. Absolutely wonderful.

I assume it will allow the American TV stations to show adverts.

Wait until the final half time show line-up is announced.

I first moved near Toronto when I came to Canada, one of my dogs died of heat stroke that first summer, never realised just how hot is was.

And 1982 was better than both of them
1978 was the first I can remember but only vaguely. Mexico 86 was where it peaked for me but whether that’s because of the quality of the tournament or just being 15 and loving every second of wall to wall football I couldn’t say. Probably the latter. But the last World Cup was superb and as JB has already alluded to, the final is one of the greatest games ever played.
