The Swans Youth were held to a 1-1 draw against 10-man Bournemouth at St. Helens in the Puma Youth Alliance South West Division, writes Owain Johns.

The young Swans went in front shortly before half-time through striker Matthew Wright, but the Cherries levelled early in the second-half when Jamie Davidson struck from close range.

Bournemouth ended the match with 10-men as Josh McQuoid was dismissed midway through the second period for an off the ball challenge on Gavin Jones.

David Moss was without midfielder Jaz Richards through injury, but welcomed back Chris Jones and goalkeeper Callum Hawthorne into the youth team set-up.

Gavin Jones and captain Dion Chambers both had chances early on while the visitors’ best chance fell to defender Danny Reeves whose first-time effort soared just over David Cornell’s crossbar after half an hour.

But it was the Swans who opened the scoring seven minutes before the break as Matthew Wright was put through on goal and neatly slotted the ball past Ryan Price from eight-yards.

Bournemouth rallied at the start of the second-half and Steven Hutchings had a shot blocked shortly after the re-start. But on 52 minutes, his strike partner Jamie Davidson struck from inside the area to make it 1-1.

Hutchings came close to putting his side in front but with 66 minutes on the clock Josh McQuaid was given his marching orders for allegedly kicking out at Gavin Jones.

James Burgin and Oliver Hewitt-Fisher both had chances for the Swans in the closing stages, but the match ended in a stalemate as the Puma Youth Alliance leagues goes into hybernation until November to cater for the Youth Alliance and FA Youth cups.

“Overall I’m really disappointed,” said Moss. “I’ve got really high expectations for this team and whenever we don’t win I’m not pleased. I don’t mind not winning if we do things in the right manner, but today we didn’t.

“We had to change the shape of the team because Jaz Richards was injured and Chris Jones was playing for us. That didn’t help our cause because we’re used to playing one way, but we should be good enough to adapt to it.

“The way we want to play is to control and keep the ball and have a bit of structure about the team. That’s what disappointed me – we were waiting for things to happen, but you’ll never get anywhere playing like that.”

Swans: David Cornell; Daniel Sheehan, Keiran Howard, Karl Keogh, James Burgin, Jamie Grimes, Dion Chambers, Gavin Jones, Chris Jones, Matthew Wright, Oliver Hewitt-Fisher. Subs not used: Jaz Richards, David Kingdom, Casey Thomas, Ashley Johns, Callum Hawthorne (GK).
