The Swansea City defender has revealed thatย – along with his girlfriend – he is learning Spanish.ย And that could earn him rewards this weekend as he looks set to line up along side Angel Rangel, Albert Serran and Fede Bessone in the Swans back four.
A suspension for Alan Tate and an injury for Garry Monk means that Serran should come into the side at Peterborough on Saturday meaning Williams could use his new skills – although he admits that their English is better than his Spanish.
โI only started learning to see if the Spanish boys were talking about me or not,โ he joked with the Western Mail, before explaining: โIt was actually something my girlfriend and I wanted to do.
โI thought I might as well take advantage of the boys here so I can get help with my homework. It definitely looks like the lessons will help this weekend though.
โIf Albert does start, it will be me and the three Spanish boys so it should be interesting.
โWe have trained all week and we know what we are doing.
โWhen I play with Fede, I speak Spanish with him all the time.
โIt has definitely helped me communicate with the Spanish boys. I can hold a few conversations and in the morning we speak in Spanish.
โItโs obviously pretty basic but I can do a bit. I donโt know the set phrases for defending though, so if itโs anything important it will definitely be in English!
โTheir English is a lot better than my Spanish.
โPeople have previously said I need to show more leadership,โ he explained.
โI have tried hard to do that and I know they look at me a bit differently now.
โItโs definitely something I need to do more when the defence hasnโt really played together before.
โAlbert will be playing his first game of the season so I need to take more of a leadership role.
โNormally me, Monks and Tatey will all chip in.
โThere will probably be more pressure on me when they arenโt playing.
โAngel has played a lot as well, though, and Dorus is an experienced head behind us.
โIโm sure between us we will work it out.โ
