Goals from Andre Ayew on his Premier League debut and a penalty from Bafetimbi Gomis pulled the Swans back twice from being a goal down but in truth we could have easily won a game where we had the better chances and dominated for large periods.

Monk must be loving opening day challenges following on from his side’s win at Old Trafford last season and this time around it was a point against the Champions but it could so easily have been more after a superb display from his team.

And you know when that has happened that it is a joy to face the TV cameras and he told Sky Sports after the game “I am disappointed that we did not win the game. It is surprising to say that but for 90 minutes today we were excellent with the chances that we created.

“My plan was to take them on. The message to the players all pre-season is that I want these players and the attacking threats that we have to play and express themselves.

“I thought we were magnificent and everybody contributed. To come somewhere like here and play the way that we did is brilliant.

“I said before the game with Andre it was refreshing when I spoke to him about coming to the club. It was about football not money and he was so keen to come to Swansea and you can see his contribution today. We have options now and hopefully we will go from strength to strength this season.

“For sure it was an opportunity on goal, the keeper comes out and takes him out it was a red card.

“I ask for the best of the players every single day and we ask them to improve every day. This is one point if we don’t back it up the next week then it is wasted.”
