James Lawson opened the scoring for the Shrimpers and Shaun Goater doubled the lead from the penalty spot on 33 minutes.

Delroy Facey brought Tranmere back into the game a minute after the interval, but Goater’s second eight minutes from time killed the contest.

Doncaster grabbed a much-needed victory over high-flying Scunthorpe, Lee Fortune-West, Michael McIndoe and Jonathan Forte were on the scoresheet for Rovers with Billy Sharp replying for The Iron.

Barnsley moved into sixth despite being held to a goalless draw at lowly Milton Keynes Dons.

Rotherham and Port Vale both lost ground on the pace-setters after defeats to Nottingham Forest and Colchester respectively.

Goals from Jack Lester (penalty) and a stunning long-range effort from Kris Commons sunk Rotherham at the City Ground, while Vale were sunk at home by Chris Iwelumo’s solitary strike.

A James Hayter double gave Bournemouth a 2-1 home win over Swindon with Steve Jenkins netting for the visitors.

Oldham ended a win of five games without a win by edging out Gillingham at the Priestfield Stadium courtesy of Chris Killen’s early strike.

Bradford shared the spoils with Yeovil with Ben Muirhead cancelling out Terry Skiverton’s early strike.

Chesterfield staged a great second half fight-back to see off Walsall at the Bescot having found themselves two goals down at the break.

Goals from Jorge Leitao and Mark Wright seemed to have put Paul Merson’s side in control, but a brace from Mark Allott levelled matters before Wayne Allison popped up with a winner 13 minutes from time.

Troubled Bristol City looked to have got a much-needed win under their belts when David Cotterill scored five minutes from time against Blackpool, but Matthew Blinkhorn heaped more misery on the Robins with an injury-time equaliser.

PREVIOUS ROUND UPS

7th August 2005

10th August 2005

13th August 2005

20th August 2005

1st September 2005

5th September 2005

12th September 2005

One Vision – 19th September 2005 Huddersfield climb into second at the expense of Brentford after a dramatic 3-2 win over Martin Allen’s side at the Galpharm Stadium.
