Blackpool were reliant on results in Bristol and Nottingham whilst it was Oldham that Swansea had half an eye/ear on as they looked to sneak into the play offs.

As it ended, neither side got what they wanted although Blackpool always had a consolation prize in hand, a luxury not afforded to the Swans who have to plan for next season – a date still three months away – it could be a long summer!

Swansea were undone by the pass and movement of Blackpool – something that we excelled in in the opening weeks and months of 2005/6 but have rarely repeated this season. But if ever you wanted evidence that it worked then just look at Blackpool and what they have achieved and what they could yet still attain this season.

There were bright spots and if Lee Trundle had found the net rather than the post from the penalty spot maybe things would have been different but it wasn’t to be. With nine goals in a game, that takes some reporting and a game that ebbed and flowed is not always easy to commit fully to memory but here we are….

The Swans lined up as

Willy

Amankwaah Izzy Lawrence Austin

Britts Craney KOL Robbo

Trunds Duffy

Subs: Oakes, Allen, Williams, Abbott, R Duffy

Swansea made a very good start to the game with some neat football and they were soon rewarded with the opening goal on 13 minutes. A free kick into the box from Robinson was half cleared to Lawrence, he played to Trundle who sent an inswinger into the far post where Izzy headed home unmarked. Swansea were briefly in a play off spot with Oldham at that point level 0-0.

The lead lasted little over ten minutes as Morrell scored the first of his four goals of the afternoon lifting the ball over Willy and sending the Blackpool fans wild. Five minutes later they got wilder as the always impressive Kiegan Parker shot home from the edge of the box to give Willy no chance and give the visitors the lead.

And they retained that lead with ease for the rest of the first half as Swansea toiled but looked unthreatening going forward with just Britton, Trunds and Duffy seemingly willing outlets to take the ball forward.

Martinez was positive at half time and sacrificed KOL for Williams, moving to a 3-5-2 formation. Britton and Robinson moved into the middle of the park alongside Craney as Amankwaah and Williams provided the flanks.

And it took less than two minutes for it to pay dividends. Williams won a corner after taking his man on and from the corner the same man headed a half clearance into the box and Trundle turned and buried a neat shot. 2-2 and the Swans had almost a full half to build on it.

Trundle could – and should – have given the Swans the lead again just two minutes later when he was felled in the box and the referee – quite rightly – pointed to the spot. Trundle sent the keeper the wrong way but watched in agony as the ball came back off the post and rebounded to safety.

It was brief respite for Blackpool though as Izzy capitalised on a loose ball on 55 minutes to give the Swans the lead for the second time in the afternoon. This was a pulsating game between two sides both intent on a higher plane for next season.

The lead was short lived again though as Trundle’s former Wrexham strike partner Morrell was on hand to grab and equaliser before heading home four minutes later to give the visitors a 4-3 lead. A hat trick for Morrell and the game was just about up despite there being 30 minutes to go – Oldham were a goal to the good at this stage.

Morrell grabbed his fourth of the game when he chipped Willy with 10 minutes to go and Swansea’s day of despair was complete when Parker rounded off a good afternoon for the Seasiders with a powerful shot from outside the area again.

Oh how we wished that Trunds could have despatched the penalty but the play off race wasn’t lost today – we were slow out of the blocks in the early part of the season and lost our way before the change in management. Roberto will be aware of the job ahead of him this summer and there has been enough in his 12 games in charge to suggest that it augurs well for next season.

Good luck to Blackpool in the play offs – they are the best side in them but best sides don’t always win play offs – we know that from last season.

Share Your Views | Rate The Players | Match Pictures

Swansea 3 Blackpool 6 Why not visit our sponsors lounge Share Your Views | Rate The Players | Match Pictures It was always going to be a tall order with Oldham playing Chesterfield at home but there was hope and optimism around the Liberty Stadium as almost 19,000 prepared to watch a game that would […]

["post-14439","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry
["GET
