Break Was Needed Says Boss<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Enforcing the international ruling meant that we could call off last Friday’s trip to Cheltenham and it is something that Roberto Martinez believes was needed for his squad despite the new season being in it’s infancy.<\/p>\n

The last taste of action was the 3-2 win over Millwall in the JPT but with a big week coming up for the Swans – after Friday they visit Cheltenham (Tuesday) and Leeds (week Saturday) – it was the perfect tonic for his squad who have started the season not quite in the way that the manager would have wanted.<\/p>\n

Explaining his logic to the Evening Post, Martinez said "We needed to give everybody a rest,<\/p>\n

"It was something that was really needed after a very busy period of football and I’m sure we can step up the intensity more than ever now.<\/p>\n

"After so many games in August, and especially with the rules in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy which stopped us freshening things up, this little break has been perfect.<\/p>\n

"We’ve had a mini pre-season where the boys have been able to work on certain things and it has set us up perfectly for a demanding September."<\/p>\n

The break could also benefit the squad in terms on injury returns with Marcos Painter back in training and ready for a return to action, having missed the last 3 games. "It’s a question of how well Marcos slots back into the group rather than whether he has recovered from his injury now," Martinez said.<\/p>\n

Martinez certainly won’t under-estimate his visitors on Friday and, as ever, has done his homework on the opposition "You have to watch games because for all the reports and information you can get off others, there’s nothing like seeing things with your own eyes," he added.<\/p>\n

"We played Carlisle right at the end of last season and, although the manager has changed and they have some new personnel, they have not changed a lot as a team.<\/p>\n

"What they are is very, very solid and very difficult to break down. They are well organised, their work-rate is fantastic and they have a couple of new boys up front who will score goals.<\/p>\n

"They lost for the first time against Tranmere, but there was nothing in the game and it could easily have gone their way."<\/p>\n
