Gower's first season in Swansea included some highly impressive performances but – bar a disallowed effort against Wolves at the Liberty – he failed to hit the target which even led to him relinquishing the "cursed" Number 11 shirt in the summer.<\/p>\n
But a goal in Spain he hopes will be the catalyst for more to come in the Championship and he told the Western Mail “Obviously that goal wasn’t the real thing, but it’s a big confidence builder, I’ve got to be honest, having gone a year without scoring, it was always on my mind.<\/p>\n
“The goal drought took its toll mentally.<\/p>\n
“Hopefully, after a goal in Spain, it won’t be an issue now and there will be more to come.<\/p>\n
“Last season was the first time goals had ever been an issue in my career and, hopefully, it will be the last.<\/p>\n
“ I want to chip in with my share.<\/p>\n
“Goals bring confidence and it just wasn’t to be last year.<\/p>\n
“My all-round game was still good and the manager was happy, but, even if you say the goals don’t matter, they do.<\/p>\n
“If I had got my share of goals maybe a lot of things would have been different last season.<\/p>\n
“I want to make up for lost time this season.<\/p>\n
“The fans stuck by me last year.<\/p>\n
“I was supposed to chip in with a few goals, but, when that didn’t happen, they never turned on me.<\/p>\n
“They always stayed positive and kept supporting me.<\/p>\n
