Garry Monk says the Swans will push on from their impressive first half of the season<\/p>\n
Monk was part of an impressive Swans side that held Spurs 1-1 at the Liberty on Saturday to take their tally at the halfway stage to 20 points – more points than many expected them to amass over the course of the season.<\/p>\n
But it is a case of job just half done as the Swans look to retain their Premier League status for next season and Monk told the Evening Post\u00a0“Outside that top eight it’s like a mini league and there’s pressure on us to win every game, but we’re in a healthy position<\/p>\n
“The gaffer said before Saturday we were two points off the top ten with nearly half the games played. Before the season we’d have snapped your hand off for that.<\/p>\n
“We’re in a great position. Saturday was another point against a top side and hopefully we can progress.<\/p>\n
“I’m sure a number of people wouldn’t have given us a chance this season.<\/p>\n
“We can’t rest on that, we want to make sure we push on in the second half of the season.<\/p>\n
“People wrote us off last season and we ended up promoted.<\/p>\n
“This season they were saying we were favourites for the drop, so there you go.<\/p>\n
“I think we showed the character and spirit we’ve got in the squad. I think we just fought from the very first minute and were unlucky to go a goal behind when we were pushing for a goal,” said Monk “That’s what good teams can do to you, but second half we came out and believed in what we were doing.<\/p>\n
“If anything, we could maybe have gone on and got a winner.<\/p>\n
“If you can come back against class teams, it’s good for the future.<\/p>\n
“I know the character and spirit in the squad. We’ve had it for a number of years and that won’t ever change whatever the score is.<\/p>\n
“We need to make sure we never drop our heads.<\/p>\n
“We learned our lesson from the first half against Manchester United, added Monk.<\/p>\n
“We were a little bit in awe of them because they are players we’ve been watching for a number of years and then we were playing against them.”<\/p>\n
“We’ve learned our lesson.<\/p>\n
“We respect Tottenham as players, but we don’t respect them until afterwards.<\/p>\n
“They’ve got quality players, international players all through their squad.<\/p>\n
“Saturday was a good day for us, but there’ll be some fantastic days for them.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
