{"id":18984,"date":"2012-11-02T09:30:11","date_gmt":"2012-11-02T09:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.staging28.planetswans.co.uk\/?p=18984"},"modified":"2020-11-02T07:13:51","modified_gmt":"2020-11-02T07:13:51","slug":"swansea-city-do-not-fear-european-champions-chelsea-says-garry-monk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jackarmy.net\/wp67\/2012\/11\/02\/swansea-city-do-not-fear-european-champions-chelsea-says-garry-monk\/","title":{"rendered":"Swansea City do not fear European champions Chelsea says Garry Monk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Swansea club captain Monk said Wednesday\u2019s night\u2019s win over Liverpool and their narrow defeat at Premier League champions Manchester City last weekend has given them the belief that they should no longer fear any side.<\/p>\n<p>They host star-studded Chelsea at the Liberty Stadium tomorrow who have averaged more than two goals a game this season under Roberto Di Matteo.<\/p>\n<p>Having added the likes of Eden Hazard and Oscar to their frontline since winning the Champions League last May, Chelsea are now being taken serious as title contenders but Monk says the Swans are full of confidence.<\/p>\n<p>Monk said: \u201cWe have belief, I think the game against Man\u00a0City showed us that we can go to the champions, put in that sort of performance and really take it to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the end we should have got something from that game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in a big game week but ever since I\u2019ve been here we\u2019ve had big games relative to that league and we\u2019ve always risen to the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn our day we\u2019re good enough to compete with anyone, anyone in Europe, anyone at all, we just have to make sure we\u2019re on it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe showed that in the Man City game, we showed it again against Liverpool and hopefully we\u2019ll show it against Chelsea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur mind set has changed, but you can\u2019t just say that, you need evidence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe result against Liverpool and performance against Manchester City, albeit we lost, has given us belief that we can achieve things and not just talk about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Swansea\u2019s win at Anfield was the first time they have taken a big scalp away from home since winning promotion back to the top flight in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Under Brendan Rodgers the Swans humbled Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool at the Liberty but never really went close to beating one of the traditional big clubs away from home.<\/p>\n<p>The league cup win over Liverpool has been hailed as a landmark moment for Swansea under new boss Michael Laudrup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went to Anfield last year, looked at all the names on their team sheet, for a lot of the boys it was their first season in the Premier League and we thought we hope we can get something,\u201d added Monk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe came here this time knowing that if we were on it we could get a result.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not just players that have come up a league now, we\u2019re Premier League players, we\u2019re top players and we deserve to be where we are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course Chelsea are a step up, they\u2019re the reigning European champions with a lot of attacking talent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn paper they are a fantastic side, there\u2019s everything that goes along with being European champions so it\u2019s going to be great for our fans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we\u2019re not here to make up numbers, we\u2019re here to win games and that\u2019s the attitude we\u2019ll take into that match.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Monk was a second half replacement for Chico Flores against Liverpool and could be in line to start his first Premier League start of the season if the Spanish defender fails to recover in time.<\/p>\n<p>Swansea are going to give Flores until as late as possible tomorrow to recover from the dead leg he suffered at Anfield but boss Laudrup admitted the \u00a32m signing was \u201cdoubtful\u201d for the game against Chelsea.<\/p>\n<p>Monk added: \u201cAll I can do is try and be ready. \u201cI tried to do my best (against Liverpool), I thought I did okay and we got the win which is the most important thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever happens I\u2019ll do my best for the club and when I get a chance I\u2019ve got to make the most of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Swansea club captain Monk said Wednesday\u2019s night\u2019s win over Liverpool and their narrow defeat at Premier League champions Manchester City last weekend has given them the belief that they should no longer fear any side.
