· <\/span><\/span><\/span>I will draw upon skills learning literature to provide a “theoretical” basis for the article and to help back up the opinions<\/p>\n \n State of play within Youth Development<\/span><\/p>\n \n One of the decisions that had the biggest impact upon youth development was that Howard Wilkinson decided that the Premier League and not the FA should control youth development. <\/span>Now, you may think on face value that this is not going to have an impact upon the development players. <\/span>However, as we have seen over the past 20 years the PL is a finance driven organisation that has neglected youth development, as shown by the decline in standards of the England team.<\/p>\n \n Also, this surrender of power meant that unlike the German DFB, the FA could not radically overhaul youth development in England and they still cannot, without the agreement of the PL! <\/span>I’ll leave you draw your own conclusions from that!<\/p>\n \n The impact of “coaching”<\/span><\/p>\n \n I used this image as it’s clear that the English national team will struggle to be as competitive as the team inspired by Gazza in Euro 96. <\/span>In fact, I question whether a “Gazza” type player has come through since the inception of academy coaching. <\/span>I will now try and quantify why the game has gone backwards in terms of “home grown” players.<\/p>\n \n Perceptions vs. Reality<\/span><\/p>\n \n In research that took place between 1999 – 2001 by senior lecturer Dr Chris Cushion of Loughborough University found that even then, perceptions of what happened were far different to what actually happened. <\/span>In an interview with an academy manager the person quoted to Dr Cushion that “I am player centred, most of my sessions are player centred”. <\/span>The reality – only 3% of the observed sessions were “player centred”. <\/span>This leads me to ask the question…<\/p>\n \n “If the coach does not know what he\/she is doing, then why are we allowing them to work with children?”<\/em><\/p>\n \n The coach as the “centre of the earth”<\/span><\/p>\n \n \n Dribbling through cones. <\/span>Pass the ball and follow it. <\/span>Training sessions that are made up of 50%, 60% or even 70% <\/strong>unopposed practices! <\/span>Yes, I understand that basic movements need to be formed, but should players who lack basic skills be in an academy setting? <\/span><\/p>\n \n <\/p>\n \n <\/p>\n \n There was a great tweet by Rio Ferdinand shown below:<\/p>\n \n Now – I ask does dribbling around cones\/passing through cones prepare players to deal with pressure from opponents? <\/span>No? <\/span>Didn’t think so. <\/span>The 10k hour rule suggested within the book “Bounce”<\/em> by Matthew Syed suggests that deliberate practice, otherwise known as practice with purpose helps individuals develop. <\/span>This poses a further question:<\/p>\n \n “How much time do we waste with players on irrelevant and unchallenging drills?”<\/em><\/p>\n \n What causes this coach centred approach? <\/span>Do coaches feel pressured to “show their knowledge”? <\/span>Do the clubs have suitable appraisal and development systems in place?
