{"id":39815,"date":"2021-04-09T07:30:36","date_gmt":"2021-04-09T06:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging28.planetswans.co.uk\/?p=39815"},"modified":"2021-04-09T07:05:17","modified_gmt":"2021-04-09T06:05:17","slug":"when-people-think-its-normal-its-time-to-make-a-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jackarmy.net\/wp67\/2021\/04\/09\/when-people-think-its-normal-its-time-to-make-a-change\/","title":{"rendered":"When people think its normal its time to make a change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the Swans go into their first full day of their well publicised &#8211; and rightly commended &#8211; social media boycott the words of Steve Cooper yesterday tell you all you need to know about why it has to happen and why I firmly believe that this will be just the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>The papers were already reporting last night that the topic of social media boycotts will be on the agenda at the next meeting of Premier League and EFL clubs and nobody is ruling out a wider boycott by all clubs.<\/p>\n<p>Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has handed over his social media channels to the Cybersmile Foundation who help tackle online abuse so it certainly does feel that the actions of Swansea City yesterday will have a much longer and wider impact across football.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">To all of you who said Swans boycotting social media was pointless, the change has already started.<\/p>\n<p>The little actions always add up.\ud83d\udc4f\ud83c\udffc <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BgQh4ZCLDJ\">pic.twitter.com\/BgQh4ZCLDJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Wil (@WilSCFC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WilSCFC\/status\/1380171545272848390?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 8, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Steve Cooper yesterday recalled his discussion on the team bus with Jamal Lowe last week after the player was subject to abuse following the Swans 1-0 defeat at Birmingham.\u00a0 It was a game where the Swans did not play anywhere near well but when the player tells his manager after the abuse &#8220;this happens now doesn\u2019t it&#8221;.\u00a0 \u00a0It is a sad indictment of our current game that players think that is normal and it has to end now.<\/p>\n<p>The cowards that hand out this abuse do not see the lasting effects and impacts of their actions and it is difficult, no actually it is impossible, to understand what their motivations are.\u00a0 \u00a0As Cooper added\u00a0&#8220;The most important thing is the welfare of the guys who receive the abuse, but then it\u2019s the aftermath of how their families and team-mates react.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With Yan [Dhanda], it was a good two or three days after where it really hit him, and then it\u2019s his mum and dad and his siblings.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The actions of the clubs are designed to make the companies sit up, take notice, and deal with the abuse properly.\u00a0 As the club statement said yesterday <em>&#8220;Chief executive Julian Winter has sent a letter to Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, and Facebook\u2019s founder, chairman and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg to reiterate the club\u2019s stance and desire to see social media companies introduce more stringent policing and punishments for those guilty of the appalling and cowardly abuse that has sadly become far too common.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And it is far too common to see online abuse.\u00a0 As Captain Matt Grimes added\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cI find it staggering that we are still talking about racism and abuse of this kind.
