An extract of the Steve Hamer Interview<\/p>\n

JackPlug: Going back to the time that you decided to leave the Chairman\u00c2\u00b9s position \u00c2\u00ad was it a spur of the moment decision or something you\u00c2\u00b9d been contemplating for some time? SH: Well I think it wasn\u00c2\u00b9t that I left the position \u00c2\u00ad I think I was jettisoned from the position. I did make a stand, I wasn\u00c2\u00b9t very comfortable with things that were happening at the Club. In truth as I said, it wasn\u00c2\u00b9t a surprise but I really was against the floatation from the outset and I think that I\u00c2\u00b9ve been proven to be right. Football Club shares have proven to be investors graveyards. JackPlug: After the event did you subsequently regret it? SH: Well I have nothing really to regret. I really didn\u00c2\u00b9t want to leave and when I went there in the first instance, I always intended I would see the club relocated into a new stadium, and hopefully someone would come in behind. A local person would be groomed to take over the role as chairman and I could return to visit friends and relations and enjoy sitting there watching the club play in a new stadium with some money in the bank and a decent squad of players. JackPlug: During the time you\u00c2\u00b9ve been away from the club \u00c2\u00ad were you tempted to visit the Vetch in an ordinary supporters capacity? SH: Never. I find it very difficult. I find it a great wrench, in fact I can tell you I have not set foot in Swansea for over 16 months, much to the concern of my parents who are in their 80\u00c2\u00b9s. I do regret it and it really does hurt very badly, I\u00c2\u00b9ve not been anywhere near it. I think the nearest I\u00c2\u00b9ve been to the city was when I played golf last Summer at Porthcawl. JackPlug: What did you miss about not being Swansea\u00c2\u00b9s chairman? SH: Miss being involved with the players, the backroom boys \u00c2\u00ad big part of it. I thought we had something going for us, I\u00c2\u00b9ve no doubt about it. We could have remained in that division if things had been left as they were. Also I have deep regrets that I couldn\u00c2\u00b9t say goodbye to anybody. I did in fact write a letter to Nick Cusack, as club captain, wishing him and the team every success and in turn I received a very pleasant letter back from Nick Cusack wishing me well for my future. JackPlug: How have you spent those weekends away from Football? SH: Busying myself playing golf, I have to tell you for the first 3 or 4 months it was extremely painful. I kept looking at my watch at 2.50pm and thinking obviously about the team and the game that they were about to play. Then hurriedly listening to the results on the radio to see how the boys got on. Of course it was very distressing because we just weren\u00c2\u00b9t winning games and we were hurtling towards relegation. We also asked…. Do you keep in touch with the goings on at the Vetch? Many fans have contacted you over the months \u00c2\u00ad Did this come as a surprise? The Subsequent seasons came and went and Swansea played on without you at the helm \u00c2\u00ad do you feel as a club we have regressed? If so what would you have done differently given the chance? Mr Petty\u00c2\u00b9s arrival at Swansea seemed to really disorientate the whole club. How did you see his actions during his brief ownership? Given the current change of ownership at the club \u00c2\u00ad what do you feel must be done to steady the ship? Is a move to the Morfa still important to you as our attendances at home and those of Swansea Rugby Club seem to be in decline!? Do you see a way to enthuse the local sporting public? Do the good times at Swansea outweigh the bad ones?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
