said a council spokeswoman. “Site investigations will start next month,”

But Landore residents remain opposed to the siting of the new stadium, which they say is only yards from their houses. They believe that the problems the Vetch has caused in Sandfields for years will simply be transferred to Landore.

There is also mounting concern over possible traffic chaos the scheme would bring to the lower Swansea Valley. Robert Speht. Liberal Democrat spokesman for the Swansea East constituency, said: “II is no use hoping that what presently is in place is adequate, there is a real lack of buses, park and ride and local train stops in Swansea Enterprise Park.”

But the council said a new railway station to serve the development could be created at Landore and mat a ร‚ยฃ100,006 study now being carried out into the proposed Hafod bypass would take account of the new stadium. Council leader Mike Hedges said; “This gives a very real and positive message of confidence in the future of our area.” Cabinet member for development Byron Owen said;

“We are now looking forward with confidence to the day when the status of the Swans and the All Whites will be reinforced by the creation of a state-of-the-art, purpose-designed stadium.” He pledged to address local concerns.

A West Wales Chamber of Commerce spokesman added; “Businesses are in support of the development and are encouraged by the positive move to develop plans which are of economic benefit and which will restore pride in me city.”
