Roger Freestone, Swansea’s long serving goalkeeper who this season celebrates his testimonial year thinks the trust is onto a real winner “If there is one thing that I have learned from my 10 years at the club it is the passion of the support. With the possibility of a fans’ representative on the board of the club I would bet my life that people get behind it and back it. |
If they can see an opportunity to get more involved in the club then I am sure that most of them will grab it with both hands. Anything that can be done to safeguard the future of football in Swansea should be done. This city is too nice a place to risk losing league football from. |
It has always been said that supporters effectively pay the players wages and now they could be helping control those purse strings! This supporters trust is a superb idea and as has been seen at other clubs it can work” |
Former Swans star, Wyndham Evans who played for the club in all four divisions during the heady days of the last 70s and early 80s echoed Roger’s sentiments “It has always been my view that the supporters pay the players wages. The invention of the supporters trust can always be a good thing for the club and for Swansea as a whole. This has worked elsewhere and with Swansea having an incredible support, it will work in Swansea. I would be all for a supporter on the board of the club and wish them all the best in the setting up of the trust” |
Another person to agree that the supporters trust can only be a good thing was Swansea born John Hartson. Hartson, who recently completed a multi million pound move to Celtic added “Being a Swansea boy, I know the way that people feel about the football club and this is certainly something that can work and I am sure it will work. |
Swansea fans are extremely passionate about their club and if they work with that passion then the trust will benefit all parties” |
These three players alone have a long connection with Swansea City. Both Roger Freestone and Wyndham Evans were loyal servants of the club and, despite playing away from his home town team, John Hartson is still a keen follower of the Swans and will look out for their results on match days. |
Further backing for the trust can only be a good thing and after the launch, the scheme will be one step nearer the dream of the fans being a major part of the football club. |
