We must stress here that the players wages have been covered by the PFA but the admin staff were in the main paid by cheque at the start of this week. I must also point out that it is a criminal offence to issue a cheque against any bank account knowing that there are insuffcient funds to cover payment and I would suggest that if this rumour turns out to be correct (and would anyone be surprised to learn otherwise?) then it is also reported to the police.
Imagine how you would feel if your December pay packet did not turn up and then put yourselves in the position of these people. People like Myra Powles from the club shop who has served the Vetch Field staff for 20 years. People who work in the promotions department, or the commercial section. They have bills to pay like the rest of us and are falling victim of one of the most evil regimes ever to be in contact with a professional football club in this country.
People moaned about Doug Sharpe but did this ever happen under his regime. Ninth Floor were no angels but they paid their staff. Mike Lewis still has a jaguar leased by this football club – you can almost guarantee that the payments on this are up to date.
This is mismanagement of a business – I fail to see any other word to describe it and these people deserve our sympathy. If people are attending the game tomorrow then can I now re-iterate that YOU BUY NOTHING inside the ground – not even a beer. Pay to get in if you want to but then curb your spending it is clear that the money is not going to the people who need it and remember without the backroom staff this club is just as dead as it would be without players.
There are many questions to be answered and my sympathies are with the people who have seen the December pay cheque bounced.
