City Council Leader, Lawrence Bailey has moved to state categorically that the Council is not prepared to sell off the Vetch Field for development. This should finally kill off any bid for the Swans from Mel Griffin who has been the subject of increasing rumours this week.
In his statement, Lawrence Bailey reveals that approaches had been made by a firm, believed to be Griffins, who were interested in buying both the Swans and the Vetch Field. A meeting between the company and council officers ended with the firm being told that the Vetch was not for sale.
Councillor Bailey said “We are aware that there are a number of parties involved in the potential purchase of Swansea City AFC. We very much hope that this results in a stable future for the club and is based upon local ownership and interests.
“However, it has been made clear in the past that the Vetch site cannot be part of the equation as it is a public asset and subject to specific controls. Swansea Council is presently putting รยฃ22 million into professional soccer and rugby by building the new Morfa stadium. It represents the biggest single investment in sport that the city has seen.”
I personally believe that this statement by Bailey will end the interest of Mel Griffin in Swansea City, which will please fans who have voiced their displeasure at Griffin possibly taking control.
