Swansea City today announced that Manager Colin Addison and his assistant, Peter Nicholas were not to have their contracts renewed at the end of the season. The news will come as a shock to many as “Addo & Nick” have done a sterling job taking the club to Div 3 safety when this was looking less and less likely during the traumas of the Petty era.

The Club’s supporter representative Leigh Dineen is a member of the Club’s management committee and he was able to brief the rest of the Trust Board late last night on the reasoning behind the decision.

Leigh said “The group has wrestled with this issue long and hard. The club is still in a parlous financial condition thanks to the chaos caused by Lewis and Petty. And there is more than one winding up order on the club and little likelihood of any further windfall income to tide things over.

Their contracts run right through the close season to September. It was in everyone’s interest to resolve this quickly. And from the Club’s point of view, it needs to be able to plan ahead and from a stable financial base so we can attack the new season on the front foot.

He ended by saying “The contracts amount to well over six figures a year, with substantial expenses. There is simply no way that the figures add up. The club just can’t afford to pay at that level for it’s management team.”

Vice chair of the Trust, John Parkhouse said today “It must seem like a kick in the teeth to them but I think we’ve got to back the management committee on this one. If the finances don’t add up then we don’t have a football club. And if we can’t afford them we must look elsewhere. Whenever there’s a problem it’s better for all concerned in the long term if it’s dealt with as soon as possible.

It’s unfortunate that it has come to this and I’d like to pay tribute to them Colin and Peter have done us proud in the short time they’ve been here and I’m sure all fans are grateful for everything they’ve done. Let’s face it, it must have been a nightmare working under Petty and it seems a small miracle to me they have got us to 46 points and safety. I wish both of them well and hope they won’t hold it against us too much. I can assure you both that you will be remembered in Swansea and will always get a warm welcome here”

We understand that discussions are under way with Nick Cusack and Roger Freestone about taking over for the remainder of the season, and, with little to play for, the remaining games could be used to give some of the up and coming youngsters a run out in the first team.
