3-0 against Boston and 0-3 against Oxford. One win, and one defeat was certainly an eventful Bank Holiday weekend for the Swans. The game against Boston saw some of the best football played at the Vetch for many a year whilst the defeat against Oxford certainly had it’s plus points. Certainly the latter score flattered the home side who for large periods of the game were second best to us. But that’s football and we move on. I am sure that most of you reading this would have settled for nine points out of our opening twelve and eleven goals in the process. Add to that the division’s leading goal scorer and the Nationwide Leagues highest scoring team and it’s not been a bad start to the season. Fourth highest home average attendance in Division 3 and a travelling support that other sides could only dream of. So many positives. Looking at one performance in particular from the last week you have to highlight ‘Magic Daps’ against Boston. Nicknamed Magic Daps by a few of the London Jacks in Holland, Lee dazzled us with his second half display. His trickery and ability to see what was going on around him scored one goal, created another and could have provided another three or four on the night. His footwork is second to none at the moment and what a signing to get this one on a free. He may have a slightly questionable hairstyle but there is no doubting his ability on the ball whatsoever. At Oxford he got little change from a tight looking defence but still managed several shots at goal but it just didn’t seem to be our day. There is nothing to be ashamed of losing to Oxford and certainly nothing to suggest that we won’t be able to hit back with a couple more victories of our own. Even the best have to lose sometimes you know!! What was disappointing though last Friday was to see more missiles being thrown on the pitch. Do some people never learn from their mistakes? Don’t they read the fact that the club have suspended fines hanging over them for this sort of incident? I would urge all fans here that if they see someone throwing anything onto the field of play that they report the incident to the nearest steward so that the culprit can be identified and removed from the Vetch. And with some luck that person will never return. There is no excuse in it and all you are doing is harming the club that you claim to be supporting. Next Saturday is of course a huge day for us both club and country wise. Whilst we travel to HuishPark for our first ever league visit to the ground, Mark Hughes takes his boys into the cauldron of Milan for a vital Euro 2004 qualifier. It will be tough for them out there but I am sure I am not alone in fancying a summer trip to Portugal next year so get behind them wherever you watch the game and with two Millennium Stadium sell outs to come we can still make this, finally, our year. And finally this week I thought I should not let this column go without a special mention to someone who has reached an impressive landmark with the club. Myra Powles (the nation’s favourite grandmother?) this year celebrates 21 years of serving us in the club shop. That’s 21 years devotion to the club that we hold so dear to our hearts so next time you find yourself in the club shop, thank Myra for her devotion to us and here’s to another 21 years eh Myra? Joking aside, it really is frightening to think of what has happened here in the 21 years since Myra entered the club shop and some of the sights that she must have seen during that time. Well done on some great service! Footnote: It was 22 years ago yesterday that Leeds were mullered at the Vetch!
