In The Programme – Macclesfield Town

Well it’s been quite en eventful couple of weeks since I last sat down to write something for this programme.

Mansfield were despatched 4-1 in an eventful game both goals wise and red card wise at the Vetch. I have to say that no Mansfield fan who understands the rules should have had cause to complain on either sending off (many tried mind!) although maybe we had the odd lucky break in the game but, as they say, that’s football and no doubt at some stage this season decisions will go against us – when that happens perhaps we should just think back to the Mansfield game and the old adage that things even themselves out over the course of a season.

Then it was a trip into cider land to take on new boys Yeovil in an early kick off. By all accounts we weren’t at the game in reality and a 2-0 defeat brought us back down to earth but still occupying one of the promotion places. As I write before Saturday’s trip North to Scunthorpe, naturally I have no ideas of the score but with an ever increasing injury list if we can get anything from that game then we have to see it as a bit of a bonus.

And sandwiched in the middle of all these games was of course two matches for Wales which saw us cement at least a play off place although it probably wasn’t quite the way that we imagined it happened. The Italy game taught us that they are still a class act despite what happened in Cardiff last year and the Finland result showed us what a great result it was winning out in Helsinki to kick it all off. Of course we can still win the group but the play off is the likely reality and what would you give to possibly take on England over two legs in November?

Off the pitch we have seen much about the capacity of the Vetch in the last few days. There may not be the bouncers that the local press would like you to believe here tonight but there is a reduced capacity. It has as well led to Saturday’s game being made all ticket – people can moan and groan about this fact but it highlights two things

– Our attendances at the moment are incredibly high

– We need the Morfa stadium if this club is to progress.

I have no issues in making games at the Vetch all ticket (as a season ticket holder I never will!) but when we look at a possibility of just 8000 Swans fans watching the game on Saturday with demand possibly being higher then a 20,000 all seater Morfa stadium suddenly sounds a lovely idea. Having been present at the Millennium Stadium on Wednesday night then one thing we also have to ensure is that we transfer the atmosphere from the Vetch to the Morfa when it was completed. And we don’t want the same level of tannoy announcer that Wales seem to make use of either. And we all remember his favourite ‘colemanball’ of all times don’t we?

Finally this week, Anthony Britton from Bergoni has kindly donated through JackArmy.net 10 Under 16 season tickets which are available to anyone (Under 16 of course!) answering the following three questions correctly. All you have to do is write the 3 answers down with your name, age and contact number and drop it into the club shop by Friday this week to be entered in the draw. The questions are

1. How much did Roger ‘The Cat’ Freestone cost Swansea City back in September 1991?

2. With which professional football club in Spain did Roberto Martinez start his professional career?

3. Recently, Swansea reserves beat Cardiff Reserves. What was the score and who scored the Swansea goals?

Winners will be notified before Saturday’s game to receive their prize from Anthony and a surprise guest.

And a definite final PS – Happy 21st Birthday To Leon Britton Today.
