Lee Trundle may be missing for some time but Swansea City’s original Mr Entertainment returns to the Vetch Field this Sunday in the re-arranged Remploy charity match.
Alan Curtis wore the Magic Daps in John Toshack’s table-topping First Division team, dazzling the North Bank with his silky skills and deadly finishing. Now, more than twenty years later, Curtis is hoping to turn on the style once more and help raise some much needed funds for Morriston Hospital’s Renal Unit at the same time.
Curtis will lead a Select XI side against a team from Remploy’s Swansea office in a fixture that was due to be played at the end of August. Many people were left disappointed when the club pulled the plug at the last minute. This time, however, nothing has been left to chance and the match will go ahead whatever happens.
All proceeds from the game will go towards the Renal Unit to help meet the enormous running costs of a facility that serves 750,000 people in the Southwest Wales area. The Unit caters for adults with chronic and acute renal failure and it has an established dialysis population of approximately 200 patients.
There will also be a competitive edge to the game in the form of a specially commissioned trophy; the Colin Baker Cup is dedicated to the memory of an extremely brave young man, who worked at Remploy in Swansea. Colin suffered from acute renal failure and sadly passed away earlier this year.
Eric Baker, Colin’s father, says: “Colin would not have lived as long as he did without the care provided by the Renal Unit. The do a fantastic job but they are stretched to the limit and suffer from a lack of resources. We can’t help Colin now, but I hope Colin’s name can be used to help save the lives of other people.”
Admission to the Centre Stand is รยฃ2.00 for adults, with children under the age of 11 allowed in free of charge. Kick off is at 1.00pm. If you’ve got a spare couple of hours on Sunday come down to the Vetch Field for what promises to be an exciting game, as well as a fascinating trip down Memory Lane. See you all there!
