I always get a little bit edgy when it’s quiet. Not because I think there is bad news around the corner but sometimes I think it breeds a little form of complacency. It could be viewed as a sign that the work has been done and now we can sit back and enjoy the football fare on offer.
But that’s not quite true. Last week again we saw the board supporting the football club by allowing Brian Flynn to bring in two new players, albeit only on a month’s loan. This is the umpteenth time that the manager has been allowed to dip into the market to strengthen his squad when it is needed and further proof that the people controlling the purse strings at the Vetch are united in their aim to want the best for this football club. And for that the fans still owe them their undivided support come matchday. But of course on the internet, we preach to the converted. We all know that and want the club to succeed – not at all costs but close to it (!!!)
Wouldn’t it be nice to see a crowd back in excess of 8,000 for Saturday’s game. Sure, we have given up the West Terrace for, what is effectively, our local derby of the season. But we have three sides of the ground available and wouldn’t it be nice to see it full of Swans fans giving their undivided support to the team for the game? Not just you guys (and girls) that come every week but your friends and family as well.
How many of us have used the ‘bring a friend for free’ voucher in your season ticket book? I would like to think a large percentage but have we. I confess that we have two season tickets in our house – both of which still have that voucher fully intact (and before the smart ones say it, yes, I do have friends!) I should have used it by now I admit. As letting a friend in for free could ensure that the friend keeps coming back for more. I promise to use it soon and so should any of you that haven’t used it already.
And the club will also benefit from extra exposure with the news today that the shirts will be available in the Travel House in Swansea’s Quadrant shopping centre. It’s been years and years that we have been able to walk into the Quadrant and buy a top from virtually any Premiership club but not our local team – thankfully that has been put right now – well done to the Travel House for making it happen.
The next week to ten days will be interesting. Three home games in that time in three different competitions. To try and increase the crowd for the LDV tie on Tuesday the club are allowing under-12s to be admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult – a boost for a game which will probably see our lowest crowd of the season. Sadly for me I will be driving back from Manchester at the time of kick off so I hope that one of the local radio stations will provide the news for me – failing that I appeal to some kind soul on here to text me the news (please!)
Then it’s the ‘magic’ of the FA Cup a week on Saturday with the visit of the ‘mighty’ Rushden and Diamonds. Last season’s third division champions will be a good test of where we have progressed too. But let’s not forget that we put in two very good performances last season against them and were unlucky not to get at least one win in those games. We’ll be keen to put that right in the Cup. A decent cup run will also boost the coffers of the club and forgive me for wanting a third round date at Old Trafford in January to boost that even more.
So let’s not let it be quiet at the moment and start building the atmosphere for Saturday’s game. There was that anticipation at the start of the season when we scored for fun at the Vetch that matchday was approaching – that seems to have died a little. We are 4th in the table and nicely placed to build on that and prove that we are one of the better sides in the division. We are Swans fans and not fans that are just here for matchdays we are here week in week out and we, as the site logo says, support the Swans – All Day, Every Day.
