Everyone Wants Trundle?

It’s natural for any player who is scoring goals to attract interest from other clubs. Harry Redknapp and Portsmouth. Harry was at Sixfields last week to watch the game and his target? Lee Trundle. Supposedly. Not quite sure how we worked that one out. Redknapp certainly hasn’t said “I’m watching Lee Trundle” and there has been no contact between Fratton Park and The Vetch to suggest that he was. Harry Redknapp is a proven manager and I suspect that is not the only game he has watched outside the top division this season – nor will it be the last.

But of course it sets the tongues wagging and people start to talk ridiculous fees. Lee Trundle is a good player and is doing a marvellous job for us at the moment but ร‚ยฃ2 million? Come on, get real. Harry Kewell went for a fraction more than that this summer and he is a world class player. Trundle has never played higher than the second division with Wrexham and I would be gobsmacked if anyone would be prepared to outlay that kind of money for his talent. And, to be fair, if they did then I am sure we would be in the queue to snap their hands off.

Trundle has just signed himself to the Vetch until the end of next season and there is NOTHING that suggests he wants to leave and nothing more than unsubstantiated rumours that suggest other sides are interested in him. I haven’t heard one club say that they are preparing a big money offer for the man I think at this point I’ll make it clear that Lee Trundle is one of the best players I have seen at the Vetch in the last decade but I don’t believe that anybody would offer half a million for him let alone more. And even at that kind of money I think the club would be better hanging on. I am sure the directors have discussed this kind of situation and, at every club, a player has his price that they cannot afford to turn down but this isn’t a selling club at the moment and no-one should have any worries about the family jewels being sold off for pennies.

However, as I say, all is irrelevant. I’ll lay money that before the year is out that there will be other clubs ‘interested’ in the man – I hear that Sir Alex is lining up a swap move that could see Van Nistelrooy coming to the Vetch for a six month period.

My viewpoint is let Lee do his talking on the football pitch and if a club is interested then let them contact us through the official channels. Remember there are scouts at the Vetch at every game – there even was at the start of last season – they are doing the job they are paid to do and that is search out talent. And, just remember that if you see David O’Leary or Arsene Wenger’s sidekicks at the Vetch when we play Stevenage in the FA Cup it doesn’t mean that they are about to move in for Lee Trundle.

Anyone want to lay money on the next interested party?
