In The Programme – Doncaster Rovers |
Another good win against Cambridge on Tuesday night has set us up nicely for this game here tonight against league leaders Doncaster Rovers. Two wins on the bounce have seen our hopes of a play off place increase and although we remain 8 points adrift from that position, we have two games in hand over Yeovil but it is vital that we keep on winning. Doncaster come here on a very rich vein of form but you know what we are like on Friday night’s at the Vetch so let’s hope that continues. Prior commitments mean that I cannot be with you all tonight (I blame the rugby personally for getting this game switched!) but in spirit I will be another of the thousands of fans behind the Swans tonight and hopefully cheering them onto victory. Of course it is a return to the Vetch as well for one of our old favourites – David Penney. He has worked big wonders at Donny since he took over bringing them back to the football league and of course in with a great chance of second division football. They are a very good side and if we win again here tonight then I am sure it will give us a massive confidence boost for the games to come. The first of two home games inside a week as well could see us really pushing the play off positions come next weekend – I still fancy a trip to the Millennium Stadium come the end of May so if the lads could oblige I would be very grateful! It’s great as well at the moment to see the Evening Post running the campaign for a permanent memorial to John Charles in the city. I’m sure Swans fans will back this campaign with all their hearts and seeing the pictures from John’s funeral on Monday was sure to touch football fans everywhere. The sight of the coffin being driven round the Elland Road pitch was something that I don’t remember seeing too often and then all the numbers in the stands shows just how much this giant of a man, in more ways than one, meant to everyone. He will be sorely missed and a memorial in the city will ensure that his legend will live on for many generations to come. See a copy of the Evening Post if you want details on how to contribute to this. Also breaking this week was the news that Paul Connor from Rochdale could be with us by now. I hear on the grapevine that this one is a good un and certainly some people within Rochdale don’t want to lose him. Hopefully their loss will be our gain. Barry Conlon was a strange target though – I hear him described as the ‘poor man’s Kevin Nugent’ – read into that particular comment what you will. The move for a striker is long overdue with the squad looking bare at the moment and any new players coming in will only serve to heighten the competition for places which again can surely only be a good thing. It should be guaranteed to make a player play better if he believes that there is someone waiting in the wings to take his place in the side surely? And nobody should ever be guaranteed their place in the side – these have to be earned. And finally this week (every time I write that I sound like Trevor McDonald) I have to go to a non Swans related part and the resignation of Ken Bates at Chelsea. Roger told me a few things about Mr Bates from his time at Stamford Bridge and the bloke is not just Chelsea, but football through and through. Some of the things that he did for the players would not be matched by many chairman in the league. In my opinion Chelsea will be worse off without his involvement within the club and I defy you to find too many (long term) Chelsea fans who will disagree with that point. I guess it was inevitable that he was to leave but sad at the same time? Anyway, back to the Swans and get behind the lads tonight (give an extra shout for this absent friend please) and C’MON THE JACKS!
