Southend 1 Swansea 1

Report By Ananova

Ten-man Swansea hung on for a 1-1 draw against a Southend side who dominated the match for long periods.

Swansea goalkeeper Brian Murphy received his marching orders late on for deliberate handball outside the box as Lawrie Dudfield raced in to score.

But Southend could not make their numerical advantage pay as the visitors held on for a point.

Swansea had taken the lead against the run of play just past the hour mark when Kevin Nugent drilled in from eight yards after Shaun Byrne and Paul Connor had combined to set him up.

But the home side needed just a few minutes to equalise when Dudfield headed in from close range after Drewe Broughton had flicked on a long throw-in from Mark Bentley.

Overall a poor performance again against even worse opponents. Flynn I’m convinced came for a point today and his tactics were unconvincing. Robinson on the bench left most of us dumb founded as the first half of watching "paint dry" unfolded before us. Murphy – 5 at fault for the goal and a few mix up’s with Izzy Byrne – 3 totally out of depth today and he won’t be staying long Johnrose – 6 looked very shaky first half but improved second. Izzy – 6 a few hair raising moments but solid Tate – 7 probably my MOM mainly for keeping Broughton quiet. Roberts – 6 got no decent ball from Byrne or anybody else for that matter Martinez – 4 very poor today constantly lost the ball against a physical Southend midfield Britton – 3 outfought and was never at the races , can’t work out how he didn’t come off. Coates – 3 pitiful first half and looked marginally better second half before he was subbed Nugent – 4 Didn’t win anything in the air and looked disinterested all afternoon until his goal perked him up. Connor – 7 a target man with pace and a brain also set up the goal… looking good Maylett – 5 his normal self. Robinson – 7 we looked far better when he came on and had two good chances to win it.. the away fans chanted his name from the start as we waited for is arrival. chants @ the game….. Murphy on taking a goal kick.. IRELAND’S – IRELAND’S NUMBER ONE – IRELANDS NUMBER ONE.. he then kicks straight into touch…. IRELAND’S – IRELAND’S NUMBER TWO – IRELAND’S NUMBER TWO.
