Make The Most Of It While You Can

This just doesn’t happen at Swansea City does it. Surely there must be something that we can play for – we always do at this stage of the season. Maybe I should buy a little trophy and we can present it to the winners of the game against York!! The feeling though is just that everyone has had enough of this season and cannot wait for the summer to get here to re charge the batteries for the (hopeful!) promotion campaign that lies ahead. The last 6-8 weeks of this season have been a huge anti climax for certain and a run of defeats hasn’t helped the general mood of the camp.

It will be interesting to see what kind of crowd we get for the last game against York. The last game tends to bring people out of the woodwork but I just can’t see that happening this year. The football has been sub standard of recent months and whilst I suspect a crowd of around 5,000, it would be difficult to see any more. Of course, the last game of next season is all but guaranteed to be a sell out as we say goodbye to the old friend that has been second home to so many of us over the years.

Which brings me to the main part of this article – the Vetch. I start an appeal now that will run through the course of the summer and beyond into and all through next season. Enjoy the Vetch Field while it is there. The club does need to move on and a new modern stadium is what we need and, if you have seen the pictures on site, what we are getting (click here for the latest on the new stadium) but the Vetch will hold so many memories for all of us and these memories will be cherished in our own thoughts throughout next season.

I have no doubt that certainly towards the end of the season we will start to see sell out crowds at the Vetch as we prepare for the end of an era and with this in mind I firmly believe that people should consider this possibility now? We have to face it that come the end of the season, I think people will start coming out of the woodwork to make one more trip to the Vetch. And if that happens no-one will want to miss out.

On that basis will we see an increase in season ticket sales over the course of the summer as people look to ensure that they will see as many as they want of the last 23 league games that will take place at the Vetch Field. Does this logic follow or will people just take their chances and hope for the best.

It is also time that the club thought about this possibility and planned for it now. I would say it is almost a guarantee that at least the last six games at the Vetch will become all ticket. Maybe even more games if the club are pushing at the right end of the division? On that basis, the plans should be put in place now The time is to reward the supporters that will be there all season and not just now. Vouchers cannot be produced for the game before, they have to be structured to keep those happy that will see the opening and middle games of the season and not just those that want a nose around the Vetch.

These are all things that I think should be considered by fans and players alike over the course of the summer and not left until the last minute when it is too late. We have 12 months to plan the biggest finale the club has seen, let’s make it a special one?
