So What Should Kenny Be Looking For? |
Well straight off an automatically we all know we need a goalkeeper. Someone new will be taking on Roger’s Number 1 jersey and the man that we have targetted by all accounts is former loan man Neil Cutler. Brian Murphy in my opinion will remain back up as a keeper still learning his trade and Cutler is certainly thought of highly in plenty of circles. To me he is a keeper that still makes errors and maybe doesn’t command his box as much as I would like to see him do but he is a decent keeper and if this is to be our man then we will have made a good start. We also released a left back this week and therefore we have another position that needs filling. Leon Hylton to me is not up to being first choice but is someone who is handy to have in the background (when of course he is fit) It will be six years since we looked for a left back and we all know that left sided players aren’t always that easy to come by. I do wonder if maybe we do have a certain Mr Legg pencilled in to take this role on but in all fairness I think we need to look elsewhere for our solution. Indeed, we need to look at the left side in general as we need a left midfielder as well. With the greatest respect in the world to Leon Britton it’s not his preferred position and on that basis I would like to see both these positions filled with new faces during the course of the summer. In the centre of defence I think we have the players that can cover what we need unless of course the board want to splash out on a new player. If you would like to perm any two of Tate, Izzy, O’Leary and Stuart Jones we seem to have enough cover there – to me again we need a new full back on the right hand side to finish off the defence – someone in the Steve Jones mould but slightly less injury prone!! Midfield on the right we are pinning on Brad Maylett and Andy Robinson is an automatic choice in the middle of the park. The Roberto Martinez of 2002/3 is what we need, not the Roberto Martinez of 2004. If we can get the former back then the centre of midfield is sorted, if we can’t then we need an addition here. Up front we can perm two from Paul Connor, Daps and James Thomas. We need another option and I really do believe that this will end up being Iwan Roberts who will move in to assist with the coaching of the club. Kenny’s Number 2? Potentially, but I hope not. Roberts as a player/coach will work, Roberts as a player/assistant manager I don’t believe will . I don’t believe that his summer shopping list will be that long but it does need to be carefully selected. Football remains a buyers market and we can watch, learn and move when the time is right for us to get a Left Back, Right Back, Left Midfielder, Striker, Central Midfielder, Goalkeeper That will give us a squad of 19 plus the youth that can be given as an option of Rewbury, Corbisiero and Pritchard. What Kenny has to ensure is that having released players that cover three of these five players is that whoever comes in is an improvement on them. If they aren’t then we won’t improve as a team. I wouldn’t expect too many moves into the club just yet either. Club’s release lists are out but very few signings will be made at this stage to save on the wages of the players over the course of the summer. And if you want me to throw another name into the hat for a number two then why not think Dean Saunders? Just an idea…….. |
