The League Cup |
In 1960/61, the Football League introduced a new competition – the league cup designed, as the name suggests for all teams in the top four divisions of the league. The finals of the competition initially started out over two legs but changed in 1967 to one game at Wembley (more recently the Millennium Stadium) The competition attracts a place in the UEFA Cup for the winners and has quite often been won by the more ‘unfashionable’ sides with some of England’s top clubs attracting criticism for fielding ‘weakened’ sides. In recent years, the clubs representing England in Europe have received a bye into the third round.
