The Football League Play Offs |
The Football League introduced end of season play offs for the 1986/87 season. The play offs consisted of four sides who would meet in two semi finals before initially a two legged final. The four sides were initially the three sides who just missed out on automatic promotion plus one who finished one place above the relegation zone from the division above. In 1988/89, the make up of the four teams changed to encompass the four sides who finished below the promotion places. Initially, the finals were over two legs – home and away before switching in 1989/90 to a one legged match played over the May Bank Holiday weekend at Wembley. Whilst Wembley underwent refurbishments in the late 90’s/early 00’s, the finals were switched to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Swansea have appeared in the play offs on four separate occasions, succeeding just once in winning promotion – back in 1988. The full list of Swans play off results is below
