Gurney On Transfer |
ANDY GURNEY has described his decision to sign a three-year contract with Swansea City as ‘the toughest call of my career’ but the right one for himself and his family, writes JON RITSON. The 30-year-old has been mulling over the Welsh club’s offer for a few days before coming to the conclusion that it was too good an opportunity to turn down. News of the player’s departure came as a bolt from the blue to most observers though, especially as the former Reading man has been one of the first names on the teamsheet during his three-and-a-bit seasons at the County Ground. A back injury has been troubling the Bristolian since pre-season but he has still played in every match of the campaign so far. The Evening Advertiser understands the Swans have picked up the player on a free transfer even though his Town deal was not due to expire until the end of the current campaign. Gurney hopes the Town faithful will understand his decision. He said: “This has been a really tough call for me, a wrench, and it is a decision I haven’t taken lightly. “I’ve loved my time at Swindon Town, every minute of it in fact, but I’m 30 years of age with two young children. I have to think about mine and their futures. “A three-year contract was too good to turn down in the end. “I feel I’m leaving one club with a bright, positive future to join another one which is also looking to progress. “Swindon are wanting to build a new stadium and Swansea are in the process of moving into a new home. “Of course it’s disappointing to leave but I really hope and believe that Swindon can go on and achieve what they deserve this year. “We came so close last season and I know there is a determination to go one better this time.” Gurney is adamant that there is no bitterness in parting. He said: “I’d like to thank Swindon for the way that they’ve dealt with this situation. They’ve been really understanding. “The manager has been fantastic and so have the fans. “I’m not leaving on bad terms and Swindon’s will be the first result I look out for on a Saturday. “Things have turned round on and off the pitch unbelievably during my time at the County Ground. “I take away a lot of brilliant memories with me and it has been without doubt the most enjoyable time of my footballing career to date.” While Town boss Andy King was expected to offer his thoughts on Gurney’s departure following training today, the player’s new boss is delighted to have him on board. Swansea manager Kenny Jackett said: “Andy is a versatile player we’ve kept an eye on. “I’m delighted he has agreed to join us. He is a great addition to the team.” It is unclear whether King will be given the funds to pursue a replacement for Gurney. SOURCE: THIS IS STFC |
