Hughes Leaves Wales For Blackburn |
Blackburn Rovers have named former player Mark Hughes as their new boss. Hughes, 40, was given permission by the Football Association of Wales to talk to Rovers on Wednesday and will be officially unveiled on Thursday. A statement said: "Blackburn announce that Mark Hughes has been appointed manager with immediate effect." Hughes is expected to stay in charge of the Welsh side for their Group Six World Cup qualifiers against England and Poland on 9 and 13 October. FAW general secretary David Collins had earlier said once Blackburn made the approach they had to let Hughes speak with them. "There was an agreement that should a Premiership club make a request that we would consider it," said Collins. Wales take on England in a World Cup qualifier at Old Trafford on 9 October and the Welsh FA are keen for Hughes to remain in charge for that game. "At the moment, what we’ve agreed with Blackburn is that if they appoint him as their manager Mark would manage the Wales senior side against England and Poland on 9 and 13 October." Hughes’ agent Dennis Roach, who revealed the coach’s interest in a return to Ewood Park, said he wanted to stay with Wales for the two World Cup ties. "The relationship with the FAW has been fantastic and I’m sure that would be continued," said Roach. "If it was agreed, I’m sure it wouldn’t be an impossible situation for him to carry on for the last two games. "Wales don’t have any international matches until February, which gives them plenty of time to find a replacement if it happens." Hughes spent two years at Ewood Park under Graeme Souness, who left the club last week to join Newcastle. Hughes would be expected to take coach Mark Bowen with him to Ewood Park. The former Norwich and West Ham defender has only recently left Birmingham where he was Steve Bruce’s first-team coach. SOURCE: BBC ONLINE |
