As expected, Swansea have completed the loan signing of Watford striker Scott Fitzgerald and he should go straight into the side for the LDV Vans Trophy tie against Luton Town tonight at the Vetch.
Fitzgerald has signed on a month’s loan after making just one substitute appearance for the Hornets this season and that despite being their top scorer last time around. Fitzgerald currently finds Danny Webber, Heidar Helguson, Bruce Dyer and Hameur Bouazza all ahead of him in the pecking order at Vicarage Road.
Speaking on Watford’s official site, manager Ray Lewington explained “First and foremost, I’ve got to say Scotty wanted to go on loan and that shows good maturity in itself, He recognised that there’s plenty of competition for forward places here right now, particularly with Hameur coming through at the end of last year and having a good pre-season as well.
“Through Nigel, we know Kenny at Swansea, and there’s no doubt it’s always better if you know the manager or a coach at the club your player’s going to. We’ve got that situation too with Oxford and Jamie Hand who’s on loan there, where we all know Graham Rix pretty well.
“We’re hoping it’ll pick up Scott’s confidence levels, banging a few goals in for Swansea. That’ll help them at the same time, of course, and he’s been a bit down of late so let’s hope it’s a positive move all round.”
With Kevin Nugent, Lee Trundle, Paul Connor and James Thomas all unavailable for tonight’s tie, Fitzgerald should be handed an immediate debut against Watford’s near neighbours although the league one leaders are expected to field a seriously weakened side for the tie.
