Swansea’s new home will host it’s first match on the weekend of 30/31 July 2005 it has been revealed.
The Swans will be the hosts on the day and the club hopes to attract a big name club to mark the opening of the new 20,000 all seater stadium which will also play host to the Ospreys.
The 2005/2006 Coca Cola League season starts the following weekend but the club is keen to secure a prestige friendly which will hopefully attract a capacity crowd for the first game in what will be a brand new era for the Swans.
The stadium is expected to be finished by the end of January 2005 and there will be a four month fit out of the behind the scenes areas with the pitch being seeded in March. The cranes and all heavy plant machinery is expected to leave the site next month once the roof is completed.
The pitch itself is a Desso Grassmaster system which has nylon inserts into the soil to give stability to the pitch. This will help the putch remain in first class condition. Both Watford and QPR have this type of pitch.
Swansea have previously contacted Juventus to discuss the possibility to them being the first to visit the new stadium although it is not clear at this moment in time who will oppose the Swans on that particular weekend.
The date for the first Ospreys fixture at the new stadium will not be known until June 2005 once the Coca Cola league fixtures are released as the football club have first priority over fixtures.
