Saturday’s attendance of over 1100 travelling Jacks on Saturday to a game that was close on four hours away from Swansea demonstrated the need for this club to have a new stadium and also the fact that the Swansea fanbase will always back a side that generates the performances that we want on the pitch.
To go away from home and create almost a third of the total crowd on the day is nothing short of remarkable. It would be something that would be expected if the trip was an hour or maybe even two away but Chester is not on our doorstep and yet we took an army of fans there that would do any club proud no matter what their division is.
Swansea fans have traditionally travelled in numbers and many home fans have commented on the noise and atmosphere that the travelling Jacks will create. I have been at many away games in the past where it has been constant noise throughout the 90 minutes and it has to lift the team when they come onto the pitch to see so many fans backing their days work.
If a good atmosphere is worth a goal start at the Vetch then what can it be worth when you are 200 miles away from the old ground and more so when you are a goal down and under pressure as we were in the first half on Saturday. The elation on the Swans players faces when Trundle scored the equaliser on Saturday tends to suggest that it was for the fans and rightly so.
A glance at our away attendances this season suggests that Chester was not a one off. In the six away league games so far this season, Swansea have been backed by an average of just over 600 supporters and that includes a midweek trip to Rochdale which drags the figure down slightly.
The figures match by match in the league are: –
Rochdale – 275
Macclesfield – 400
Cambridge – 248
Yeovil – 794
Wycombe – 745
Chester – 1150
Superb efforts from everyone that has taken the time o travel and get behind the team on their jaunts away from the Vetch. Especially more so when you consider that in total in five league games we have seen just 1140 away fans at the Vetch at an average of 228 – inflated because of the 500 plus that Northampton brought on the opening day.
With the Swans challenging at the top end of the league table then you can only expect these numbers to increase as the season goes on and with Southend, Shrewsbury, Oxford and Kidderminster in the next 6 games away from home in the league then expect some big numbers to increase the away support even more.
Our location may go against us in terms of travelling time but the dedication of the Swansea support is to be commended at the moment and long may it continue.
Well done one and all!
