In The Programme – Rochdale |
Why can’t we do things the easy way? Just six short weeks ago, the odds on us winning promotion were reducing week on week and the team was winning far more then it was losing. Now we go into this game looking up at the promotion places on the back of just one win in seven games. I know this is Swansea City but it doesn’t do too much for the blood pressure for this to keep happening. From here on in we have ten games to get to the goal that was set by Kenny Jackett back last May when he spoke to us from the directors box. He said we would have a big season and as I write will still have every chance of getting just that. We need to return to winning ways, that much is stating the obvious, and with six or seven wins needed from those ten games then there is no better time to start that then today. Let’s go for it and let’s do it. I suppose at this stage maybe we should expect Huw Jenkins to follow the lead of Delia Smith and address us all from the pitch at half time today? How crazy was that woman or should I say how drunk was she? Sorry but although I see where she was coming from, I would cringe if Mr Jenkins took it upon himself to deliver that kind of message but at this point in proceedings I will stop myself from mentioning anything about women and kitchens – no matter how appropriate it is in Delia’s case! What you did know was that there was no way I could let this column pass without the words ‘Cardiff and ‘City’ They are seriously worrying times for Bluebirds fans at the moment and very possibly times that sadly we remember all too well. I always did wonder of the wisdom about the way they were doing things up the road especially when the warning signs were out there from different clubs as to what problems a spend, spend, spend attitude could have. Fine if you have the money (Chelsea) then by all means spend it but getting yourself heavily into debt on the off chance you may reach the promised land seems like madness. Especially when you start chasing that dream when you are more than 70 odd places away from it. You have to question the wisdom even further when you witness sides like Rotherham, Plymouth and Hartlepool who are all pretty much in the same position but much more sound financially. Quite simply I do not want to see Cardiff City go out of business but they let an outsider in to mess with their club and it has got them into trouble. No matter how much it may pain them to admit it they could learn a lesson or two from us on that front. Especially if the press reports are right and we are about to announce a trading profit – something pretty rare in modern day football especially from a club that has not been selling it’s players on. Events at Ninian Park have only confirmed what some of us Swans fans have always known – that Sam’s dream was purely that and delusions of bigger than Barcelona were madness comments and that Cardiff are no more of a sleeping giant than we are. One FA Cup win before most of today’s crowd was born does not make anyone a sleeping giant. Not in my book anyway. But back to today and the Swans which at the end of it all is the only club important to most of us. With just five games left at the Vetch we have to be setting ourselves a target of 15 points from those games that will put the promotion we crave within touching distance so sorry to the Dale fans that are making the trip (quiz question – do Rochdale hold the record for the least travelling fans at the Vetch for a league game?) but we want this one today – don’t we?
