Around 6 million of the 24 million anticipated plastic inserts have been placed into the pitch already with the machines working 19 hour shifts into the early hours of the morning using the Dessomaster system.
Hewitt Sportsturf have been engaged as contractors having already had experience of working on pitches at Highbury, Anfield and Madejski Stadium in Reading. With the signs of green within the stadium becoming more and more visible by the day then it is now much easier to imagine football being played inside there.
Fans are reassured that despite the plastic inserts, the pitch will still be natural grass but these plastic inserts are designed to knit with the grass to ensure that no divots and the like can be taken from the pitch area ensuring that it can cope with the heavy demands that will be placed on it during the football and rugby seasons.
The actual seeding of the pitch will take place in around three weeks time once the plastic inserts have all been laid and it will be ready in time for the new anticipated opening date at the stadium which it is believed will now be July 23 with Premiership opposition in Fulham strongly rumoured to be the opponents for Alan Curtis’ testimonial.
I have to say that this is the third time I have now visited the Swans new home and with every visit it is becoming more and more impressive. The view from the areas of the West Stand that I went into was equal in all areas and fans will also be able to take in a much wider view of the play then they can currently experience at the Vetch.
The leg room between the seats as well will come to a welcome relief to those of us that squeeze ourselves into the centre stand week on week and all I can say at this moment in time is roll on July as I really cannot wait now.
White Rock or not, this will be a home that the Swans and the Ospreys can be very proud of and believe you me there will be several glances of envy cast from those in the East no matter what they would like you to believe.
