The report takes into account total mileage travelled to get to away games and then multiplies that by the average away support that sides take away with them. And with that calculation then, the Swans fans will rack up more miles this season than any side outside of the Premiership.

The Top 10 mileage totals are: –

1 Newcastle 22,782,000
2 Sunderland 22,272,000
3 Portsmouth 21,792,000
4 Middlesborough 19,890,000
5 Swansea 19,388,000
6 Luton 18,032,000
7 Oldham 17,838,000
8 Rotherham 17,550,800
9 Chelsea 17,268,000
10 Tottenham 16,848,000

Now of course those in opposition to the report will suggest that the Swans are one of the furthest clubs away geographically wise, a fact borne out by the presence of Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesborough in the Top 5, but you also need to remember that this doesn’t just include the mileage travelled once it is multiplied up by the average away support per game.

TV pundit Robbie Earle commented “We all know how dedicated fans are when it comes to following their teams. But this research shows which teams have the best supporters.

“It’s great that some of the smaller clubs have made it into the top ten. It shows you don’t need to be in the top flight to have devoted supporters.”

Indeed, Robbie and I would probably go one step further to point out that you will see a damned sight more passion at grounds in the coca-cola leagues then you will in many Premiership grounds.
