Torquay’s player of the year of last season, Adebayo Akinfenwa, returned to torment his former club by scoring the goal that put Swansea on their way to a 3-1 LDV Vans Trophy win.
Akinfenwa – making his first return since leaving for City – rose at the far post to head home Andy Robinson’s left-wing cross four minutes from time to put Swansea 2-1 up.
Two minutes later it was Robinson himself who made it 3-1, shooting home from the edge of the box.
Torquay had started well and took the lead in the 23rd minute when Jo Kuffour exchanged passes with Alan Connell before shooting home right-footed from 15 yards.
Referee Mick Fletcher awarded Swansea a penalty in the 30th minute when home goalkeeper Andy Marriott was judged to have fouled Akinfenwa, but Marriott pulled off a fine save to deny Robinson.
The visitors made a double substitution on the hour, bringing on Lee Trundle and Roberto Martinez, and they began to dominate the game.
The equaliser came in the 65th minute when Adrian Forbes cut in from the right and curled a powerful shot into the far corner.
