Ok, so it wasn’t the prettiest game in the first half, and we were dominated in the second, but the Swans did take a 2-0 lead away from home and hung on to it, won £100k and RORY FALLON actually got on the score sheet!
However, before kick-off, the administrators at the Racecourse landed an ‘exclusivity agreement’ with Neville Dickens who has gathered a consortium that are interested in taking over the club. Good luck to them, as we all know about the difficulties of taking back the club you love.
The cup holders lined up as below:
Gueret |
Tate |
Lowe |
Monk |
Ricketts |
Britton |
O’Leary |
Tudur-Jones |
Robinson |
Fallon |
Trundle |
Subs: Bayo, Martinez, Williams, Knight and Forbes.
The first 30 minutes were poor, but in general the Swans were in control. OTJ was looking a bit rusty on a poor pitch, where Robbo was looking to get his foot on the ball and break. Wrexham were obviously playing the counter-attack, but weren’t seeing any real chances on goal. Then again, neither were we.
The Swans took the lead with some neat play to break. Robinson attacked through the centre and played a lovely weighted through ball to Britton who fired in a low cross from the side of the area. Dragons’ defender Danny Williams got on the end of it, putting the ball past Ingham at the near post. A massive blow for the home side.
The game didn’t exactly burst into life but it did improve on the Swans front. Some pressure football saw Trundle in possession, he got into the area wide left of goal and shot across the keeper, but a weak stop fell to FALLON, who opened his Swansea account with a ‘clynical finish from 6 yards’, ok, the story went more like… ‘with the goal gaping did his best to miss, with the ball bobbling behind him. He managed to get his shin on it and stick it in the back of the net to increase the Jacks advantage’. At the end of it, it was a goal and forwards on barren runs need that bit of look to get them going again, shame he’s cup tied for the weekend.
O’Leary came very close from long range just before half-time, his right footed drive from 30 yards went inched wide of the post as we took hold of the game for the first time in the match. That was all for the first half, but at least the players had started to show what they can do.
Wrexham went all out, in search of an early goal to get themselves back in the game. Danny Williams got up well with a header that went narrowly over the bar in an attempt to make up for his o.g. in the first half.
Loanee Sam Williams headed straight at Gueret from Holt’s cross. The Dragons were getting crosses in with ease, as Spender proved with a run down the right, Holt got on the end of it but Gueret came up with the goods, palming the ball over the bar for a corner.
Dennis Lawrence was a surprise playmaker of the next chance as he appeared on the left wing. His cross was stubbed out by Ricketts who did well to get in front of his man.
The Dragons pulled 1 back through Spender who was given way too much space by the Swans defence inside the box. The ball came across from the left and he hit the ball on the outside of his right foot into the bottom right hand corner, giving the impressive Gueret no chance.
That’s 1 down, 1 to go as far as cup competitions go. The win over Wrexham gives an added high to the players as they go into the game against Carlisle on Sunday looking for more silverware.
