Away Days – Scunthorpe United

So back in June it was announced that the Swans would begin their season on road at Scunthorpe, not Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday or Sunderland as us fans had hoped! Just one bus left the Quadrant at around 12:30pm after picking up at Morriston beforehand.

This was my first away game of the season, as I shamefully missed the pre-season friendlies! (How can I call myself a fan?) Most of the usual regulars were there – you know the ones, who have been to every single Swansea games since 1952!

The one absentee for the trip was the legend that is Ugo, a Swans trip without Ugo on the coach is like Morecambe without Wise, like Tom without Jerry or Richard without Judy, you get the idea! I ended up sitting next to stan_the_jack for the five hour to Sunny Scunny. (It was the only seat left – honest!)

The viewing on the way up was ‘On the buses’ quite appropriate but not really my cup of tea, but then I had to talk to Stan 😉

The first service stop was at Strensham at around 3:10 – a quick coffee stop and back on the bus. Fanzines were also being sold on the coach, so it was something to read to pass the time, stan the jack and I were both in agreement that Andrew Cude knows nothing about football and wears rose-tinted glasses when it comes to Roberto Martinez! (Just kidding!)

We then had a pub stop at Bramley at 5:20 for an hour, the local Northern drunks kept us entertained anyway, couldn’t understand a word they said. They asked us to sing songs by the ‘Beeckles’ – whoever they are!?

We finally arrived at Glanford Park around 7pm. It’s a small, old fashioned ground, on the edge of the town. There are no pubs nearby and there were poor facilities inside, but I have seen worse. Us true fans were housed behind the goal (about 300 of us!), which was all seated. There was also a good, loud atmosphere, due to the low roof.

After a nerve-wracking, but exciting game, we departed Scunny at around 9:45pm, with the main feeling of a well earned point and fans seemed a little more optimistic than the journey up. It’s strange how people’s opinion change after a few days. I tried to get some sleep on the bus as I was due into work early that morning, but it’s difficult with stan_the_jack talking for the whole journey.

We arrived back in Swansea at around 2:45am, very bleary eyed, but ready to do it all again on Saturday against Oldham. The total costs of the day were:

Coach: £17

Ticket: £10

Programme: £2.50

Drinks/food: £10

Total: £39.50
