Away Days – Brentford

Another Tuesday night game, this time away to Brentford – the third time we’ve played there in less than a year. The one bus left the Quadrant at 2:15 in the afternoon as the Swans looked for their second away win of the season.

The mood was a little more optimistic after recent weeks on the coach; Many were a little disappointed about having to sit in the stand instead of being on the Terrace for the game, as Brentford decided to make money out of the travelling swans at the last minute. The talk was also wondering what would happen should we take more than 600, would they open the Terrace then? We would find out later.

We arrived in Brentford at around 6.30pm, this time there were no delays on Chiswick roundabout (Thankfully!) and from a distance even the New Wembley almost looked finished.

Griffin Park is situated in around a housing estate and it’s the only football league ground to have a pub at every corner of the ground. It’s an old style ground, there are three covered seated stands and an uncovered away terrace. I arrived inside the ground about half an hour before kick off, managing to get in for just a fiver, instead of the rip off price of £19.

The Programme cost £2.50, but again, like most of the away programmes this season not many articles on the Swans. Just three pages on the Super Swans, but another to add to the collection I suppose.

I had never sat in the stand before, the previous times I had stood on the terrace. It’s a little cramped to say the least! No leg room whatsoever and a few pillars blocking the view, similar to how the old Centre Stand at the Vetch used to be.

As kick off loomed it was clear that there was not enough room for all the Swans fans in the stand. There was a chant of ‘Stewards, sort it out’ before they finally opened the Terrace behind the goal. A little sneaky by Brentford as most fans had paid £19 to enter the stand, then were allowed to move to the terrace.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable game, and there was a good atmosphere from the 749 travelling Swans, with ‘It’s just like watching Brazil’ getting a rare airing, it was also good cheering the Swans players every touch in the last 3 minutes as well as waving goodbye to the Brentford fans who had enough of their teams performance.

The journey back seemed to go quite quick (strange that!) and a good atmosphere on the way back, a few of us were wondering whether our new style of football would last and we had a giggle on hearing about Cardiff’s result against Plymouth.

The coach arrived back in Swansea at 2am – after a slight delay! With a long journey in our next fixture to the Priestfield against Chesterfield.

So all in all a good day on the road – for a change, a win, two great goals, a clean sheet and good football. Not bad for a fiver, more of the same please.
