The Official coach left the Liberty Stadium at around 11am, on the same coach that broke down on the way to Northampton; luckily we didn’t break down this time. This was obviously the shortest away trip of the season and we arrived in Newport at around 12:30.
We parked in the college across the road from Spytty Park and a short 5 minute walk across the road into the away end.
I bought a programme – I’m sure the seller short changed me too, but not to worry. As long as they didn’t use it for throwing practice! Spytty Park is a typical non league ground; it has four sides, one main stand which was seated, the rest terracing – with an athletics track going all the way around.
The Swans fans were gathered behind the goal, about 500 yards, maybe more, from the goal. A terrible view in an uncovered terrace – I imagine Brighton in December will be similar.
There was not much of an atmosphere for this game, which I was quite surprised at, with the game being an all welsh affair. The Jackarmy did their best to be heard but with no roof on the terrace and being miles away from the action, it was difficult. We also could not hear any of the announcements as the tannoy was facing away from us – God help us if there was a fire or an emergency.
Many jokes were being made on the view from the terrace – like we came to Newport and watching the game from Cardiff, also trying to distinguish which player was which – not an easy task.
I could just about see the goals. But I’m sure I saw Trundle score with his right foot and Britton with his head, but like I said the view was awful so I probably imagined it.
When the game finished we made our way out, there was a lot of police there, it was actually quite intimidating as the masses of police led us to our buses. We passed a local league football game, with chants of ‘You’re worse than Newport County’ which amused me, if not anyone one else.
So a nice trip up and back, we arrived back at the Liberty Stadium at 4.30 approx, a quick pub stop before I made my way home.
Next away game at Port Vale – where the Swans haven’t won there since 1957 (11 games) surely it’s time for the duck to be broken?
