It will come as no real surprise that the spending in January 2007 will not match the outlay of January 2006 as all clubs look forward to the transfer window opening in just over two weeks time.
The Swans were amongst the big spenders last January with several new additions including Rory Fallon, Tom Williams and Leon Knight. The spending went past the half a million barrier but it failed to have the desired effect with promotion not gained.
Further additions were made in the summer and recently Ian Craney and Marcos Painter both arrived – initially on loan. But chairman Huw Jenkins has said that although there is money available to Kenny Jackett, the spending will not be as high this time around
Talking to the Western Mail, Jenkins said
“If we feel there’s a need to spend money next month, then the money will probably be available for us to do that,
“But the emphasis is on bringing in one or two players who Kenny thinks will give us what we’re lacking at the moment.
“We’re not going to spend money just for the sake of it.
“We spent quite a bit of money last January and we’ve got to be honest and say we haven’t had the return we wanted. We’re still waiting on a number of things.
“The impact of the players who come in has to justify the money you spend on them.
“I’m sure our supporters would be the first to point out that us spending money didn’t give us a lot in return.
“That’s something we can’t hide from. It would be foolish to say otherwise because clearly the impact we wanted was the club winning promotion last May.
“From January onwards we simply didn’t get enough points – that’s a fact.
“As ever, it seems December and January are going to be massive months for us.
“If we’re going to stay in touch with the top two, and ensure we’re right up there fighting come the end of the season, I feel we need a minimum of 10 points from the five games between now and January 1.
“I think that’s imperative if we’re to close the gap on the automatic promotion places. Otherwise, we’re going to need a hell of a good run over the second half of the season.
“We’ve threatened to go on a good run once or twice, but we haven’t managed to show the consistency needed to move forward and climb the table.
“We can’t be waiting and waiting for that to happen. It’s got to happen sooner rather than later.”
