Today’s News of the World links Swansea with a move for Ipswich midfielder Gavin Williams. Williams, who rarely attracted the respect of the North Bank when playing for Yeovil, is potentially available from Ipswich after being one of seven players on a lads trip to Amsterdam just before the Tractor Boys recent FA Cup tie at Chester.
The replay of that game is this week and ironically the winners will play the Swans in the fourth round on January 27 but by that time, if the report was to be believed, then Williams could well be in the Swansea. Williams though would not be able to play against Ipswich even if there was something in the story – he is cup ties having played in the match against Chester.
Swans manager Kenny Jackett has shown interest in Williams before now – he tried to get him on loan whilst he was still at West Ham but the Hammers only wanted him to go to a Championship club and any interest fell through from there.
Swansea are not alone in tracking the players with Championship clubs – including Coventry – said to be interested but the report says that Swansea’s interest is the strongest.
A source close to Williams is quoted as saying “Swansea have asked about Gavin and they’re very interested in signing him.
“It doesn’t look like his wages will be an issue but Ipswich are looking to get รยฃ500,000 and that might be a problem. Gavon doesn’t really want to leave Ipswich – but if he has to go then he wants to go back home to South Wales.
“That means he will join either Cardiff or Swansea. If Cardiff don’t want him then he would rather sign for Swansea than join another Championship club.”
The cynical ones amongst us could easily read those quotes more as a “come and get him Cardiff” saying rather than a “he will join Swansea” phrase and I would imagine that the half million pound price tag – if correct – could put us out of the market. In addition we have midfielders returning from injury and suspension over the next few weeks which will make what looks a pretty threadbare midfield at the moment look very much stronger.
Never say never but my gut feel here is that Williams has more chance of turning out for Cardiff than Swansea. But never say never.
