Club captain Garry Monk says the players let down Kenny Jackett.
Speaking in the wake of Jackett’s departure yesterday, Monk said “We have massively let the gaffer down. To say that is a bit of shock Kenny has gone is putting it mildly
“There were a few rumours flying around before we got to training,” said Monk, who is on the comeback trail from a cruciate ligament injury sustained in the second game of the season. “We were all taken down to the training ground and Nuge (Kevin Nugent) read out a statement that the gaffer had left. “The lads were all devastated and gutted. “It is sad to think that he felt he no longer had everybody’s support. “Some of the criticism in the past few weeks has been ridiculous. “We have only lost the last two, it is not as if we are in a crisis. Maybe some people will be happy now.
“I have tried to phone the gaffer but his phone was switched off so I left a message to thank him for all his has done for me,” he added. “He has been brilliant with me – I’m devastated he has gone. “The players now have to go out tomorrow (at Doncaster) and give a performance he would have been proud of. We have to focus on getting promotion and stick together. “But we know that we have let him down massively.”
