Managerless Swansea’s promotion hopes suffered another setback as league leaders Scunthorpe secured a 2-0 victory at the Liberty Stadium.
Leading scorer Billy Sharp put the Iron in front with his 22nd goal of the season in the third minute and on-loan striker Jermaine Beckford secured the points with 20 minutes remaining.
The prolific Sharp produced a clinical right-foot finish after the Swans’ defence failed to clear their lines.
Swansea stuck with the side that earned a point at Doncaster on Saturday and apart from conceding that early goal they dominated much of the first half but failed to create any clear openings.
The loss of the striker Ade Akinfenwa through injury right on half-time blunted the Swansea attack and they found themselves two goals behind when goalkeeper Willy Gueret could only parry a long-range strike from Neil Mackenzie leaving Beckford with a simple tap-in.
The home side never looked like getting back in the game after the second goal and are now five points adrift of sixth-placed Tranmere.
